The Wren strives to ensure its reporting answers community questions and points to solutions. With this goal in mind, we created a series called Roadmap to Recovery, rooted in research and local voices.
This resource guide is for people seeking addiction treatment in Kamloops (Tk’emlúps). The list is meant to serve as a starting place for accessing information on services and programs available locally, based on publicly available information. For the most up to date information, be sure to reach out to the program or service directly.
Resources listed with a single asterisk are abstinence-based and those listed with a double-asterisk are harm reduction-based. Check The Wren’s recovery glossary for more details.

Detox
Before entering residential (or second stage) treatment, you will be required to complete a period of sobriety from drugs and alcohol. This is achieved through detox, or medically withdrawing from substances. The reason for completing detox before treatment is to ensure people are safely supervised and receive appropriate medical care (like medication) while going through drug withdrawals. Completing a period of detox helps get the person ready to participate in treatment, to the best of their ability. This also protects clients already in programs, making sure they are not triggered by someone under the influence in a safe, sober space.
Most treatment programs are not licensed (legally allowed to) provide detox services, only post-detox recovery support. Day One Society is the only medical in-patient detox program in Kamloops. It serves the entire Interior Health region (alongside Kelowna-based program, The Bridge Youth & Family Services).
Day One Society* Medical Detox Program (in-patient)
Medical Detox Program Brochure
Eligibility: People in the Interior Health region, seeking to medically detox from drugs and alcohol.
Location: Phoenix Centre Facility, 922 3rd Ave., Kamloops
Phone: 250-374-4634 or 1-877-318-1177. You can also text Detox services (250-410-4577), Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Email: info@dayonesociety.ca
Cost: Covered by BC Medical Insurance
Length of Program: Minimum 5 to 9 days (exact time varies by individual).
Intake: Individuals can phone and request a spot. Clients can be admitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days of the year. Each client will be assessed by a medical doctor within 24 hours.
Waitlist: Yes. Sian Lewis (Executive Director) confirms the waitlist is “rarely less than 25.”
Waitlist Requirements: To keep the waitlist functional, people must phone in every 24 hours to confirm they want to remain on the waitlist. If a participant does not call to confirm their spot on the waitlist or declines, they are dropped from the waitlist. This vetting process also ensures people who are most vulnerable are seen first (ex. someone who is pregnant). Individuals can call again to be added to the waitlist. Lewis notes the waitlist is “not a perfect thing,” with ebbs and flows. “It’s dependent on what’s happening in the community with drugs, if there’s a scare, and there’s some very toxic drugs being circulated, sometimes people are prompted to try and detox sooner than later.”
Services Offered:
A safe and supportive environment to medically-withdrawal from alcohol and drugs (detox), while being monitored by medical and recovery professionals.
Clients will be assessed, receive individualized support, have access to crisis counselling, yoga, and educational-support groups, while in the program.
Post-detox, clients are referred to other support services by a Discharge Coordinator (including addiction counselling, Methadone, Suboxone, and Sublocade to reduce cravings). Wait-lists for other programs means it’s not possible to go right from detox to treatment. Day One communicates with other local recovery services to try to minimize gaps in care.
